Film Courage: Zach, when did you start writing screenplays?
Zach Zerries, Screenwriter/Author: I started in NYU film school, so a while ago. I was writing short scripts in film school and then my first script I wrote right after I graduated.
Film Courage: Was this part of your thesis to do these short [scripts]?
Zach: No, I wasn’t in the dramatic writing program at NYU. We were in the film production/TV production major so to speak. We focused more on producing and directing. We did obviously take a writing class or two, but that was more geared toward short films that we would shoot ourselves or produce (or at that time video). We had the TV production but for the most part no, I didn’t. I had always been curious about writing, but once I got out of film school and through film school I developed an affinity for writing and editing and the beginning of the process and the end the process, but I always thought the most creative parts of the process of making films or making television. Again it was mostly short stuff through film school but then when I got out I started thinking Alright, let me give this writing thing a go and I wrote my first script. I think I had started on it maybe during film school but then after graduation I finished it.
Film Courage: After graduation did you stay in New York City?
Zach: For about a year. I worked some jobs and I had my family there and I had a girlfriend at the time who I was very serious with. Once I sort of realized that New York wasn’t the place to be, I had spoken to some friends of mine and fellow Tisch alum who were out on the west coast, it became clear that I needed to move out here to LA and start my film career. This is where everyone and everything was at the time. It’s since changed a lot and involved but back then that’s when it became clear that New York really wasn’t happening on the grand scale or to further my career at the time in the film and TV business so I moved.
Film Courage: When you came here did you have any sort of, not buyer’s remorse, but did you have a couple of sleepless nights where you said Maybe this isn’t for me?…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
