A Screenwriter‘s Worst Nightmare (You’re Not Going To Believe This Story)

Film Courage: Off-camera Blayne you were talking about ideas being in the ether, the Zeitgeist…about writing something that somebody else is already writing and you don’t even know [that they are writing it] and they don’t even know [that you are writing it].
Blayne Weaver: Well, I just think that every idea has a moment, right? Like we’re all watching the same stuff. We’re all on Facebook. We are seeing the same news articles. The same sensory input is coming across our brains and you take a couple of steps as a screenwriter. You’re always trying to find a hook, find a new idea, find something. I think there is just…I think it’s indefinable (I really do) but ideas have a moment. So…my story is that I had come up with this script which was a supernatural, thriller kind of thing and it was a jumping off from The Da Vinci Code (which was very successful at the moment) and so I had this idea about the Clone of Christ idea. That was the big hook and it’s a really good script (actually still is). Anyway with this little action mystery thing…so an agent flipped out! “Loved it! Fantastic!” This was a long time ago when we printed scripts. So I printed out 50 scripts. And we had to pay for that. I don’t know if you’re aware of that? [Laughs]. But in the smaller agencies, I had to go and print 50 scripts (feel bad for me). So I printed these 50 scripts. I take them to my agent and I drop them off. Then I go to work at this bar. And I walk into the bar and the bartender (who I work with) has a Hollywood Reporter on the bar. And I’m like “What’s this?” And he’s like “I got hired to write a script today for this big production company…a big secret idea…secret script. So I got hired for it.”
“Fantastic! You are out of the ‘bar business.’ Congratulations!” I look at the article and I think the title is interesting…and it sound like…a lot like what would be the title of my movie…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).

Weaver wrote, directed and starred in the Southern Film Noir thriller CUT TO THE CHASE. Previously he starred in writer/director Paul Osborne’s psychological thriller FAVOR and the acclaimed romantic comedy 6 MONTH RULE (alongside Martin Starr, Natalie Morales and John Michael Higgins) which he also wrote and directed. Previous films he’s written and directed include WEATHER GIRL (with Tricia O’Kelley, Mark Harmon, Jon Cryer and Jane Lynch) and OUTSIDE SALES. He also co-wrote and acted in MANIC (Don Cheadle, Joseph Gordon- Levitt and Zooey Deschanel), directed by Jordan Melamed, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He has appeared in films such as WHERE WE’RE MEANT TO BE, JUNK, DEEP DARK CANYON, OFFICIAL REJECTION and THE GOOD OLD BOYS opposite Tommy Lee Jones. His numerous episodic television credits include ER, NCIS, and THE MIDDLEMAN. He also provided the voice of Peter Pan in the Disney animated feature RETURN TO NEVERLAND.
