Film Courage: How soon after your father told you about the idea of sin eating did you know this was going to become a movie?

Adam Davis, Screenwriter/Author/Filmmaker: Kind of right away…a little bit because it was so sticky to me because based on the previous films that I’ve done, I’ve always liked to make movies and stories about the haves and the have notsand the disparate nature of power when it comes to money with the people who have it and the people who don’t. That immediately stuck with me, this is what I want to write about.

I took it to my writing partner and we started to think about what would be a good way to make this movie. We thought doing something modern day would be good, looking and doing a lot of research for that, finding that it went from Wales and England in the 1500s and it sort of came all the way into the U.S. (the whole concept of sin eating) and it got lost in the Appalachians in the early 1900s and then it kind of disappeared.

You don’t hear about sin eating anymore. We were like:

That’s interesting, where did it go?

That was the genesis of thinking about if we were going to do it in modern day, it’s this underground thing that maybe people have continued to do, and if so, where can we land?

We were thinking about different places in town, maybe Los Angeles, or where in the country? We landed on Chicago because the aesthetics of Chicago are great. It’s very much Gotham City for me from Nolan’s films…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).
