Film Courage: Why do 99% of writers fail?
Corey Mandell, Screenwriter and Screenwriting Instructor: So many writers have a dream to succeed and they work hard to learn the skills to grow their talent and they’re dedicated and they don’t succeed and they feel like well I’ve learned all these tools and I work all the time and I guess they don’t have what it takes. If you ever find yourself in that place I want you to remember something, that there’s three things that are required, there’s a missing piece. Yes, skill, talent. Talent is repeatable. Skills you have to be able to write in conflict, you have to be able to write great characters and dialogue and heightened concepts. All of that yes and you’re going to probably have to work hard to develop that but once you do and you have that talent you obviously need dedication right? You can have all the talent in the world. If you don’t work hard, it’s not going to happen.
Okay, you have all the talent, have all the dedication and you can fail which then tells people I guess I don’t have what it takes. I want you to think about Bruce Springsteen. He’s pretty good right? He’s not a rock and roll star, he’s a rock and roll God. I think we would agree incredibly talented. I think you’d agree incredibly dedicated. He didn’t go to college, he didn’t get married, he was just playing music all the time for like 10 years for no money…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
