Film Courage: How did the strike change the game for writers?

Kaia Alexander, CEO/founder of the Entertainment Business School/Podcast Host/ Author: The strikes which were so painful for so many of us. The work stoppages for so long had some silver linings. The greatest silver lining being this awesome contract that they got all the points that they were negotiating for, that the AMPTP [Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers] had said like hard no and then they ended up getting so many of those boons to their contract: the pay increase, the room size guarantees, and so many other wonderful things that came out of it for on the contract side.

Also walking the picket line and making friends. Many writers made lifelong friends coming out of the strike. I bet there’s a few strike babies too, they’ll be on the way, can’t wait to hear about them. Then of course I think one of the silver linings was now we all understand so much more about the business side. Before the strikes I was one of the only people out there teaching writers the business side. Here’s what you need to know about your step deals and your contracts and what to negotiate for. I had writers who I knew who I was either coaching or who came through the school who like working for free – no, no, don’t work for free…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
