Why Are Movies So Predictable? – Thomas Verrette

Thomas Verrette, Director, Producer, Editor: Just because how it may end doesn’t mean that the journey is not valuable either. I think predictability is a tough one to ask because it’s not all or nothing either.

Film Courage: Why are movies so predictable these days?

Thomas: I think that there’s a couple reasons. One is the amount of content that is out now. I think it gives us the impression that movies are all predictable when maybe it’s just the movies that we’re watching or the things that we think or the movies that have the big releases if that’s the question, are they predictable? In that sense I think that’s partially engineered to just how the system works in a way. I mean those people are getting Oh, let’s do this franchise. There’s familiarity and maybe the predictability of certain things. Maybe that’s what makes people comfortable. Maybe that’s what is drawing in them millions of dollars from a studio executive’s side that’s putting up 100 or 200 million dollars to make that movie. They have to play those things safe in theory. I don’t know if that’s true but I can at least understand why they may be predictable. Independent cinema and maybe some of the lower tier budget types of films I think should take those chances to do some differently to not be predictable. I think that the ones that are successful generally are because they’re not but maybe there’s also a lot to weed through to get there too. I don’t think that movies are all predictable but I think that the ones that we are barraged with often are and as an independent filmmaker I’m struggling with this even on my…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).

 

BIO:

Thomas Verrette is an award-winning director, producer, and editor in Los Angeles. His most recent work is “Zero Gravity”, a feature documentary about middle-school students who compete in a nationwide competition to write code for a satellites aboard the International Space Station, which premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival in 2021, and has continued as an official selection at DOC NYC, Heartland International Film Festival, Dances With Films: LA, and SCAD Savannah Film Festival, among many others. Verrette is best known for producing the FOX Sports docu-series, “Phenoms”. The series was shot in 20 countries and follows the professional and personal lives of 60 young star players as they fight their way to their respective national teams for the World Cup in Russia 2018. Verrette also edited the “Goalkeepers” episode, which premiered the series at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018. Other featured work includes editing the feature “Parallels”, co-producing the series “Small Shots”, and executive producing the documentary “Ordinary Gods”. He also produced and edited the promo campaigns for multiple seasons of the critically-acclaimed series “Kingdom”, as well as “Ice”, “Rogue”, and many others while working for DirecTV/AT&T’s Audience Network. He also directed promos for “The Dan Patrick Show”, “The Rich Eisen Show”, and “Undeniable with Joe Buck”.
