15 Story Beats That Can Help Anyone Write A Screenplay – Zach Zerries

Film Courage: You spoke earlier about Blake Snyder’s Save The Cat. Do you take a lot from his outlining advice?

Zach Zerries, Screenwriter/Author: Yes, I said earlier 16 beats and it’s 15 beats. He has the main 15 beats in his story. They pretty much fall in order and take you through the story. They definitely are (I think) a great guide and goal post to telling your story and doing it in an effective way. They really hit on (and I’ve said it a few times) working smarter not harder. Being able once you have a clear logline and you are Okay, this is the story I want to tell, it’s concise, 30-40 words, then you want to start breaking it apart.
