Film Courage: Phil, when someone tells you that filmmaking is a pipe dream, what is your reaction?

Phil Hawkins, Writer/Director: [Laughs] I mean there is part of me that…yes it is. The other part is like No, it’s not! Look at me, I’m doing it. I’m making things. I’m making films. I came into this with no connections to the industry, no family members in the industry. I didn’t go to university, I didn’t go to film school. It was from the bottom as you could possibly imagine just with me pouring over my Jurassic Park annual from 1993 and seeing these behind-the-scenes pictures of making Jurassic Park and thinking That’s what I want to do. That’s my calling, that’s my thing and yes it’s a pipe dream, but I am going to find…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).


Phil Hawkins is an award-winning commercials and features director. He’s directed hundreds of television ads globally and made five feature films released by Sony Pictures, Lionsgate and Netflix. Most recently he’s written and directed Star Wars: Origins, a film shot location in the Sahara Desert that’s taken 3 years to make combining his love of Star Wars and Indiana Jones in a unique re-telling of the beginnings of the saga.
