How To Develop A Screenplay By Starting With The Themes – Van Ditthavong [FULL INTERVIEW]

Film Courage: Van, you say you like to write about themes of love, loss and lust? Once you know your themes, how do you develop them into a screenplay?

Van Ditthavong, Filmmaker/Photographer: Those are the things I am really drawn to and what starts everything for me. Once I have those themes, then I have those characters. Once I have those characters, then I can give them these goals and then once they have goals I like to then create the world that they’re in. But my worlds are really kind of similar but I like worlds that are similar to when we are about to fall asleep and we hear someone in the other room and you can’t tell if it’s a dream but you know it’s real and it’s that stage and then your knee jerks and you…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
