How Writers And Filmmakers Can Ruin A Great Story — Rachel K. Ofori

Film Courage: What makes a great story?

Rachel K. Ofori, Producer/Writer: Oohh! What makes a great story…I think ultimately if it evokes an emotional response, whatever that emotion is whether it’s elation, sadness, fear. If it evokes emotion it’s a great story. How that happens is so many things but it has to evoke something because if not the people leave feeling like Okay…that was smart. It could be brilliant but did they feel anything from it. I think if it evokes an emotion through the story not just something random, it’s a good story.

Film Courage: Have you watched a film where you could tell other people were not into it but you were or (vice versa) it was one that was recommended and the critics all loved it and you were like Yeah? It didn’t get to me.

Rachel: Yes, normally it happens the other way around where I’m like This is awesome! And people are like Ugh, I didn’t get anything from it…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).

Solicitude – A crisp, cinematic 96-second short film on mental health (depression, loneliness, suicide) and what each one of us could do to CHANGE it.  In times of quarantine and remote work, mental health has become essential. Writer/actor Uday Krishna’s Solicitude spotlights mental health, depression, and suicide with a positive ending on how all of us can improve within our own network. Uday along with Christina Perez (the director, editor, background score) and Emmanuel Vega (DOP, Lights) shot this short in three hours using one location.
