Film Courage: How did you meet your collaborators [on COMRADE DETECTIVE] Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka?
Rhys Thomas: It was through this project [COMRADE DETECTIVE]. I met with John Hodges at A24 and he mentioned in the meeting this weird idea these guys had come up with. I thought it sounded intriguing and I think I’d just done Season 1 of DOCUMENTARY NOW.
It was in a similar vein, it felt similarly, sort of like an exploration of a film genre and also the fact that it was a foreign set was really appealing to me. So I was interested and I told them I was a fan. At the time I was at SNL and doing DOCUMENTARY NOW and I was like “It sounds great, but I don’t think I can do it, but yeah, good luck.” And about six months later they called me up and said “We still haven’t done it and it looks like we might be moving ahead, would you like to read the script and maybe come in and talk about?”
I got the first episode draft and read it. You know, it’s funny because there are elements that are quite different from what it is…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
