About THE FITS:
Eleven-year-old tomboy Toni (a showstopping Hightower) is bewitched by the tight-knit dance team she sees practicing in the same Cincinnati rec center where she boxes. Enamored by the power and confidence of the strong community of girls, Toni spends less and less time boxing with her older brother. Instead, she becomes eagerly absorbed in the dance routines and masters drills, even piercing her own ears in an effort to fit in with the older, more assured girls. But when a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells plagues the team, Toni’s transformation and her desire for acceptance become more complicated.
“Beat by beat, thrilling move by move, the director Anna Rose Holmer — making an impressively assured feature debut — proves that the his-and-her spaces of the boxing ring and dance floor are more multilayered than they seem.”
– Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
“First-time writer-director Anna Rose Holmer crafts a meticulous mood of psychological isolation and beguiling mystery through her metaphorical tale. This immensely promising debut suggests a bright future for its maker.”
– Nick Schager, Variety
“Holmer turns this coming-of-age movie into a dreamy, dread-inducing portrait of a young woman in full self-discovery mode, with woozy dollops of magical realism and next-level spiritual transcendence mixing it up with mesmerizing drill routines.”
– David Fear, Rolling Stone
