Film Courage: Why do you like twist endings?
Rory Karpf, Producer: You need a good ending because it’s the last thing people are going to be left with. You’ve got to stick the landing.
I remember the movie Field of Dreams, everyone remembers that ending where Kevin Costner is like “Hey, Dad do you want to have a catch?” And the music is building. Every male there is leaving the theater crying. They don’t remember what was going on 90 minutes before that, some weird stuff in that movie if you go back and watch it, scenes and driving and boss…just saying they stuck the landing. That’s the last thing you’re left with.
So I knew for Grace Point [movie] wanted to make sure I had a memorable ending. I can be self-critical. I’m not somebody who thinks just because I directed it it’s good but I’m also not a self-hater, like Ahh, everything I do s*cks. I try to take myself out of it and judge it.
We were watching the film at the premiere and I kept saying:
I don’t like this part.
Why didn’t I do this differently?
But the ending I got..I feel like I got that right. I got that ending that I wanted…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).
