Film Courage: Spencer, if you were going to make another $50,000 movie, how would you start?
Spencer Whiteout, Filmmaker/Podcaster: I’m not sure exactly just because it is really difficult to make a movie at any level. I will say though where I was at that point in my life (and this can help other people) we were at a point where we were in film school and realized we were at a unique point in our lives, we can borrow the film school’s equipment, we have free labor from all these film students who are super excited. We have student film insurance and we don’t have full-time jobs yet. We’re not repaying our student loans yet. It was the perfect storm and the perfect time to make a movie. I’m not going to go out and say I encourage everyone in film school to go make a feature because it is so much work. I would encourage you to do it if you already know in your heart that you need to do it and you’re already set on it, then go for it. If you are in your later years in film school (junior/senior, whatever) it could be a wise move. It’s a unique opportunity that you might not get at any other point in your life. That’s what we did and it worked out really well for us.
