Film Courage: What do you say to someone who tells you creativity happens magically?
Jason Eric Perlman, Writer/Filmmaker: Magic is a weird word to define, right?
There’s the conventional notion that magic is an ethereal thing that we can’t explain but that we can command, right?
Magic I think is the wrong way to describe how creativity happens.
I don’t think it’s magic.

I think it’s a form of surrender, if that’s the right word for it, where like we were discussing earlier about sort of being truthful and honest with yourself of cultivating your creative voice and your creative antenna, so to speak.
I think when you surrender into that and you’re not pushing, you’re not groping for I need an idea. I need a great idea. I need to pull this big idea for whatever I’m going to do next out of the ether.
I think that doesn’t work very well that way.
I think what happens is when you sort of lean into your authenticity as a creative person and just sort of surrender of not pushing too hard, not asking anxiety…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).
