Film Courage: What is Story Ritual?
Adam Argot, Story Artist/Instructor/YouTuber: My thesis is basically that what people are describing with the character arc is Arnold van Gennep’s theory of The Rite of Passage.
The function of a rite of passage is ultimately about endowing The Initiate of the rite of passage with the proper values and the way they do that is through metaphorical conflicts.

Arnold von Gennup the folklorist and then kind of contributed largely to anthropology (to understanding anthropology) came up with a kind of three phases of or three stages of the right of passage.
It was:
The preliminal
The liminal
The postliminal
When I was reading through that, that’s when it really clicked the parallels between the stages of rite of passage and story structure, dramatic structure.
A lot of people talk about the act one threshold, you cross the threshold into act two.
