Film Courage: Can you break down the 4-act structure starting with routine?
Adam Argot, Story Artist/Instructor/YouTuber: The tradition is the three-act structure, which largely goes back to Socrates, the beginning, the middle, and the end and the unity of action and all that stuff.
Ultimately, you can have seven acts, you can have two acts, you can have one act.
I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out What exactly it is that makes an act? What composes an act?
What I came to was an act is defined, ultimately there is a unity, but it’s a unity of strategy.

The first act is when we’re first introduced to the character.
We’re learning what their values are.
The whole point of the first act is to engage in the character, see what they care about, why they care about certain things.
The way we learn what they care about is by how they solve problems.
