Film Courage: How can filmmakers best prepare their projects for buyers? 

Zac Reeder, Owner of Lucky 27 Media/Producer’s Rep, Distribution and Financing Consultant: I think first they should do their research, do their homework. 

Just like if you were getting into any other business, you would want to say, What other things are similar to what I’m going to make that have done well and which ones have done poorly and try to figure out why?

 

Once you break down these other similar films, hopefully you won’t make the same mistakes as the ones that did poorly and you can research the market, talk to distributors, talk to foreign sales companies, talk to reps and consultants and say:

This is my plan. 

This is what I’m thinking it will do. 

Am I on the right track? 

Does it seem like it’s going to be a successful project?

Most of the indie filmmakers, if they don’t really have a lot of experience, they’re going to learn a lot through that process and hopefully before they start spending money and making a movie that won’t be sellable. 

I think a lot of times you see great sums of money going out and being spent and then a film getting finished that just has no place in the marketplace. 

If they would have spent a little time, a little bit of research, they could have made a little change here and there. 

The single most important thing right now for distribution is names in the cast.
