Film Courage Why do you journal?
Tony DuShane, Writer/Podcaster/Teacher: Well, to keep the world a better place because I would probably be a more irritable person if I didn’t journal in the morning.
But the journaling, which that’s part of The Artist’s Way.
I learned about that many years ago.
There’s so much truth to writing a lot, just writing the crap so you can get to your thing.
I always have to write a journal about myself and what’s going on and then wherever that takes me.
I mean, the journals take me to so many places.
I have no forethought. I could hand write five pages and I’m like,
“Okay, I’m done. Wow, I went there.”
And I’ll put a little note and go,
“Use that for blank. Put it aside.”
But that’s so I can get everything out of the way to work on what I need to work on.
That’s a lot of the reason for it. Yeah.
Film Courage: I think you interviewed a woman recently on Drinks with Tony where you were talking about filling journals, even if it’s for novel writing, with the handwritten pages.
Tony: Yeah. That with first drafts.
Even when I used to write articles for the San Francisco Chronicle, it was always on a yellow pad.
I don’t know why, it creates a whole new thing to do.
But for some odd reason, I just need that pen to paper.
I think I need to know that I don’t need a machine to be a writer.
I can have nothing and I can have a pencil and paper and it’s just like I’m good.
I would like some food and maybe a beer, but I’m good.
Film Courage: Within reason, whatever you’re comfortable telling us, what do you write about?
Tony: Oh, in my journals? Sometimes it’s…a lot of it recently is family stuff. This is interesting to me. I mean, it’s interesting because as I dive into…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).
