Film Courage: John, what do you think of the saying ‘We all have one true passion?

John Vorhaus, Author/Speaker/Artist/Screenwriter: I would say that saying is incomplete. A more complete expression would be: 
We all have at least one true passion.

In just thinking about my life, my understanding of my controlling idea, my one true passion has changed over time. Broadly speaking I would say my passion set equally in habits:

-Writing

-Teaching

So my one true passion is comprised of two true passions. I think one true passion limits the conversation.

 
 

Film Courage: Did you grow up with the idea that there was one true thing that you knew you should devote your life to or is this something that you’d been exposed to early on?

John: You know, it’s funny, since we met last among other things, I did a thought experiment. I wrote a memoir called John Vorhaus: Year-By-Year. The challenge of it was to describe every year of my life to no more than one paragraph.

-First years are easy

-1955, don’t remember

-1956, don’t remember

-1957, vague memories of cheese

At a certain point I start to get into my teen years for instance and look at who I was and what I felt at the time and one thing that struck me as I reflected was I had this sense that I wanted to be big in the world. I didn’t really know what that meant but I just knew that I desired that thing. I didn’t even articulate it around Oh, I want to be an actor or a writer or an artist or anything just known I think and that idea.
