Film Courage: What’s your advice to someone wanting to sell their first book?
Desireé Duffy, Founder of Black Château, Books That Make You Podcast, and The BookFest® Adventure: I think one of the things they should do is find their writing community early on so that they really understand the market and what the publishing landscape is like and get some advice from other authors too.
One of the great things about the writing community, it’s very inclusive. I know authors who are huge successes who will then mentor and help out other writers. Going to conferences where you can hang out with other writers, watch them talk on panels, learn during workshops or masterclasses. I think all of that can really help an author who wants to get that first novel out there because there’s just so much that they don’t know early on.
Another thing I like to suggest too is working with some kind of writer’s group. Nowadays we’re fortunate in the fact that you can have a writing community from around the world. You can meet up with people using Zoom or social media or whatever.
A lot of organizations in our backyards can be tapped into as well. So no matter where you are in the United States or the world, see if there’s any kind of writer’s group or writer’s conference, writer retreats that are happening nearby or maybe even not so nearby.
Again, if you do want to travel a little bit, nothing beats going to a writer’s conference…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).
