Film Courage: I believe it’s taken you over four years to make and release Off Rip movie. Why was making this film so important to you?
Jadon Cal, Filmmaker/Actor/Screenwriter: Making this film I think was important to me for the same reason any film I make is important to me is just because at the time I’m making it I’m inspired to make it. It feels like it has gravity in my own life. It feels like it could be something that could benefit other people and impact them.
It was kind of a win-win for me because it was the first movie of its kind that it’s about skimboarding. There’s never been one before and it was a movie I originally had written because when I was living in that town working on our little indie films, I was just thinking about what’s something that I can make on a doable budget that takes place here that we can do?
I came across this idea of making a skimboarding film. I think it was important to me at the time because it was what I felt like I could do and take the next steps in my career.
I also found a through line and a message that made sense to me that was important enough to tell.
Film Courage: And you believed in the main character? Does that main character have parts of you in it?
Jadon: The main character is fully based off of me. It’s a little different in the sense that I didn’t grow up as a skimboarder. I’m more of a skateboarder and played football but I loved the beach. I grew up on the beach. The character is heavily infused with my own persona in it. It was not a stretch at all outside of a couple different family dynamics.
My mom always says Oh, Jan is based off of me, which is the mom character. And I’m like No, no, no, no. She’s not based on you. She’s actually based off of such and such..
I always say that the little brother character is the little brother that I never had because I always begged my mom and dad for a little brother growing up and so didn’t get to have one but I got to have one in Off Rip.
Film Courage: Imagine if you were going to teach a class on producing a movie to someone, a group of people let’s say that have never done a movie. How would you take us through the whole process?
Jadon: Is this just as a producer or is this as an artist?
Film Courage: As a producer.

Jadon Cal began his storytelling journey at a young age under veteran actor parents in Los Angeles, California. From training in a multitude of acting workshops and appearing in a few independent films growing up, he transitioned into the film industry right out of high-school. Having produced & directed multiple feature films, Jadon has continually molded his craft with a unique perspective and continues to study under various acting coaches around LA.
His most notable credits and achievements include starring in “Robbie Ain’t Right No More” which screened at Tribeca Film Festival and has garnered him a slew of awards at festivals around the country. He’s also recently worked on larger scale productions with actors such as Joey King, Mira Sorvino, Lee Majors, Danielle Harris, and Aleksa Palladino. His upcoming film, “Off Rip” which he wrote, directed, and starred in, will be screening in festivals in 2025.
