Film Courage: We’d love to hear more about the writing process for your first book. Can you talk about some of the first steps?
Desireé Duffy, Founder of Black Château, Books That Make You Podcast, and The BookFest® Adventure: I was absolutely pantsing it. I had the idea and I still love my original idea, which is why I’m redoing Oubliette [Oubliette: A Forgotten Little Place on Amazon here] but I just started writing.
I was very much going in chronological order. At least for me, writing chronologically doesn’t actually make sense. I found, now that I’m rewriting it, jumping around, going through a whole character’s arc as a pass and then another one and then bouncing back establishing things early on that you see in this through line that goes all the way through, that’s what worked for me.
So I definitely began as a pantser, as they’re called, flying by the seat of my pants. Then in retrospect I realize Oh, I should have been a little bit more of a plotter. I think folks generally fall somewhere in the middle of that panster/plotter spectrum but in some cases folks will want to plot out every little thing.
