Film Courage: I believe one of your first assignments is for writers to imagine viewing their story in a movie theater?
Viki King, Author and Film Consultant: Yeah, everybody who wants to be a screenwriter has seen many, many, many, films so we’re all experts at watching film. Watch yours in your head and feel it, feel it all the way along the way. You’ll be amazed. What’s great about that is you could write out all the beat cards for the entire film if you just watch it reeling in your head.
Film Courage: What if though we see the audience enjoying it, let’s suppose we’re in the back row and we’re watching our movie and we’re like Yeah! And they’re getting these parts and they’re laughing at the right spot and they’re quiet in the parts that are sad, but in reality a lot of times people don’t see you the way you think that they should be seeing you. How do we reconcile this? Or we’re in the dream phase where all this doesn’t matter yet?
Viki: Tell me a little more about that?
Film Courage: It sounds great. They’re going to watch my movie and then I’m going to come up and do the Q&A and everyone’s going to give me this round of applause. In real life, there are going to be like five people going…Yeah, that was stupid. Why’d you do that?
