Film Courage: How is your approach to writing novels different from writing screenplays?

Adam Davis, Author/Screenwriter/Filmmaker: I’m terrible at writing novels. I say that straight up!

Film Courage: What’s terrible?

Adam: I say that straight up. I don’t think that’s necessarily my forte. Screenwriting is definitely my forte but my approach for writing novels I’ve only done one. I wrote it because I wrote a script and it’s very, very big. I’m like okay, it’s not going to get made necessarily so maybe I should just write a book so that it can be pre-existing IP as a lot of people are doing now. They’ll write a book, it’ll get optioned, turned into a script, turned into a movie. That was kind of my approach for that because I knew that the idea and the script itself was so big.

Film Courage: You said you’re not good at writing a novel, where do you think your weaknesses lie?

Adam: I don’t know if I’m not good at it, I just know that there are so many better writers than me in terms of that sort of prose format.

I don’t think that I really put enough work into figuring out how to write that way. I was using skills that I learned in high school and college. I think writing a novel is a bit of a different skill set than writing screenplays. I was putting all of my time into learning and trying to perfect writing screenplays.

The novel was kind of a departure, it was a fun departure. I learned a lot. I think that helped my screenwriting as well but I haven’t done it since. When people read Circus they’re like we need…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).
