Film Courage: Why is a female protagonist usually the best for horror?
Anthony DiBlasi, Filmmaker: That’s an easy one. I mean in the sense I do think as, and maybe it’s changing a little a little now, but I think as a collective species people care more about women. Men in our history have been disposable. Men go to fight war. I grew up with a father that was much older so those things are instilled in my life.
If I’m walking on the sidewalk with my wife, she’s always on the inside. If she moves to the street side, I’m going to move again.
I think as a collective there’s a lot of that in our collective whole as a society that when a female is in jeopardy, I think people tend to care more, no matter how much they care about the characters. We can love the male characters but it’s always going to be inherently in horror people feel like a woman is more susceptible to being hurt or overpowered. It’s also good and horror to play with those expectations.

Anthony DiBlasi graduated film school at Emerson College in Boston MA. Upon moving to Los Angeles he became a protégé of filmmaker/novelist Clive Barker. DiBlasi partnered in Barker’s production company Midnight Picture Show for nearly ten years, serving as a key executive & producer on films such as “Midnight Meat Train” (2008) and “Book of Blood” (2009). DiBlasi made his directorial debut with the psychological thriller “Dread” (2009), a feature film he wrote based on the Clive Barker short story of the same name. “Dread” was released theatrically in January of 2010 and went on to win Best Independent Feature at the 2010 Spike Scream Awards. He directed and co-wrote “Last Shift” a critically acclaimed supernatural horror film released by Magnolia Pictures in 2015. And directed “Extremity” a psychological thriller based on Extreme Haunts, released in 2018 by Epic Pictures.
