1. Meal prep. Have food and snacks ready. Chop and store in the refrigerator all meals for the weekend. Make pre-arrangements for dirty dishes such as eating out of to-go containers to free up cleaning time.
2. Charge laptop, phones, legal pad/notebook ready.
3. Prepare for blocks of times to write, even as little as 15 minutes.
4. Don’t over commit to any plans for the weekend.
5. Pick out something comfortable to wear (sweat pants, no itchy sweaters, soft socks, etc.).
6. Start your writing session with gratitude.
7. Think of 3 questions that you are going to answer during your writing session.
8. Does writing with music inspire you? Prepare a playlist.
9. Organize and clean your designated writing spot beforehand but not as an excuse for busy work to avoid writing.
10. Do you stand or sit while writing? Have a comfortable chair or standing pad ready.
11. Power down the cell phone if it becomes a distraction such as checking social media, breaking news, etc.
12. Have inspiration writing books nearby.
13. Prepare coffee, tea or other beverages that will keep your mind clear.
14. Do you have a favorite writing quote? Post it as an affirmation at your desk.
15. Go for a walk or a hike before or after the writing sessions. Taking a notepad is a great way to jot down ideas and limit distractions from your phone. Or if you are using your phone you can consider dictation.
16. If you have kids or pets at home, what is their schedule? Can you prepare for them to be cared for during this writing time even if YOU are the designated caregiver? Think treats, games/toys to occupy their time, etc.
17. What do you use as a reason (legitimate or not) to avoid writing? Is there a way to examine this before the writing weekend?
18. Is there a reward you can provide yourself for accomplishing a good writing session which you can factor into the weekend?
19. If being outdoors or in a busy environment feeds your writing, can you plan for one or two public spots to visit? Prepare your backpack (a screenwriting bug-out bag) with essentials to take on the go stationed by the door.
