Film Courage: You teach film and television or writing in the UK?
Andrew Zinnes, Author/Senior Teaching Fellow/Script Doctor: That’s correct, film production at University of Portsmouth.
Film Courage: What percentage of the students are native to the UK?
Andrew: 90 percent of them are British and then there’s another 10 percent that come from everywhere, China, Central Europe.
One of the places we get a lot of Eastern European countries. We had one girl who came from the Ukraine, which in this day and age was interesting. She had an interesting perspective, getting back to what we were talking about before, we talked about some of her stories, telling stories that she wanted to about her film that she wanted to make.
We talked about the war and whatnot. She said I don’t really want to do that myself. I want to…there’s other parts of my culture I really want to talk about.
I was like Okay, like what?
And she said Well, you’ve probably heard of the character Baba Yaga? If you’re a John Wick fan… She says but That comes from my country and I’d like to tell something about where it comes from, who she is and maybe…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).

Andrew Zinnes is Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth, UK. He has worked in development at Paramount Pictures and at USA Networks. He left to become a script analyst, and worked for Morgan Creek Productions, Artisan and several script analyst companies. Using his documentary filmmaking experience, Andrew was the perfect co-author for The Documentary Film Makers Handbook. He has taught documentary at the NY Film Academy and has lectured on filmmaking at schools and colleges around the US. He is a founding partner of the film company Crazee Pictures.
