Film Courage: In our 2019 interview you said you were weak with story structure. I’m wondering how you feel about this now?

Adam Davis, Author/Filmmaker/Screenwriter: I did say that and I definitely felt that at the time. I think it was important for me to understand that based on my first film Broken Ceiling and the reception to it.

I was like I’m good with character interactions. I’m good with dialogue but I think the story structure maybe wasn’t fully there so that’s something that I set out to really work on. It took a lot of work.

I never went to film school and it was all sort of self-taught. It was at that point (post 2020) where I was like I should probably take at least a course. I’ve read a lot of books but let me get some actual instruction and try to figure that out.

I took a UCLA extension course which was super helpful.

Film Courage: [I] love them.

Adam: It was great and it taught me so much. A lot of it was learning how to write but it was less a course about the fundamentals of writing and more about reading everybody else in the class’s script and then breaking it apart, giving them notes. That teaches you so much about structure, what’s working, what’s not. When you look at it in somebody else’s and then you reflect on your own and go What do I need to do?

I think one of the things that has helped me probably the most…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).
