Film Courage: How do you come up with the budgets for the movies you’re making?
Sarah T. Schwab, Writer/Director/Producer: It’s a long process. My producing partner is the one who comes up with the preliminary budget and then we sit down and talk about it.
With each shoot we’ve learned a lot about which department needs what. If there are stunts needed:
-How many stunt people?
-How long each scene is going to take?
Usually we start off with a very good first assistant director friend of ours named Amy Lynn. She’s a good friend of Karen Allen’s as well from the Berkshires, Massachusetts. She’s worked on tons of TV shows, tons of films and we give her the script when we feel very confident about it.
We create our own breakdown. She creates a breakdown of everything and then we compare and contrast and then ultimately put it together.
That’s anywhere from:
-How many cast members are there going to be
-How many days do you think we’re going to need them on set
-Catering
-Where we’re going to put people up
-Transportation
Those are just for the shoot itself.
We’re going to need:
-Location scouting
-We’re going to need permits
-If you do street shots you need permits
-If you’re going to do a driving shot, you’re going to need police force to stop the traffic on that road.
There’s just so many things that go in pre-production…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).
