Film Courage: Can you tell us the day you realized that CG was taking over?
Craig Caton-Largent, Visual effects artist and current Chair of 3D Animation & VFX at New York Film Academy (NYFA) Los Angeles: Yes, it was a day at Stan Winston’s on Jurassic Park. We had been creating, we’d kind of seen it before a little bit on Batman Returns. I was in charge of building all of these penguins with rocket packs and we made all these puppets. It was this interesting back and forth thing where they would decide some of the puppet shots that get replaced with CG shots and then some CG shots got replaced with puppets and there was kind of like this ongoing tally. Like, okay for maybe these really long shots that are dark it’ll work but then right after that we launched right into Terminator 2. We thought Okay, we can really cool stuff like liquid metal man and stuff like that but how well can they do…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).

A pioneer in digital effects, Craig co-founded Digital Domain and developed groundbreaking VFX software like Animservo, used by top studios and theme parks. As the Chair of the Visual Effects and Animation Department at NYFA, Craig is dedicated to helping his students develop animation and storytelling skills that will lead to success in the industry. Craig is also a sought-after speaker on motion capture technology at film festivals and universities worldwide.
