Film Courage: Get an idea. Write it down. Rewrite.

Film Courage: Sounds easy, but is it?
Andrew: No, but it’s the truth.
Film Courage: Okay how come most people struggle with this though?
Andrew: Why do people struggle? Well, because writing is difficult. I think anyone does. I’d say even John Steinbeck probably when he was sitting down at his typewriter had problems. Charles Dickens and Jane Austin probably all had trouble at some point, even though they had great ideas and great themes.
Writing is hard and it’s something that we teach people is that it’s the one thing that you need the least amount of equipment to do.
Okay, I mean you really just need a pen and piece of paper but yet it’s a lot of up here.
First it’s a lot of research. It’s a lot of writing to find that right idea. It’s a lot of reflection to find out…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).

Andrew Zinnes is Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth, UK. He has worked in development at Paramount Pictures and at USA Networks. He left to become a script analyst, and worked for Morgan Creek Productions, Artisan and several script analyst companies. Using his documentary filmmaking experience, Andrew was the perfect co-author for The Documentary Film Makers Handbook. He has taught documentary at the NY Film Academy and has lectured on filmmaking at schools and colleges around the US. He is a founding partner of the film company Crazee Pictures.
