Film Courage: Of the two things that writers need to know, the first is what you want to write and then the second is you’ll need to know how to write it? So what are the most important factors for knowing how to write it?
Viki King, Author and Film Consultant: Well, the one is that you don’t know.
Film Courage: Okay.
Viki: Because the ones that you do know, you don’t even know you know and they naturally work out.
I’m not a believer in knowing theme and plot and this and that because that’s all head stuff and then you can’t really write it anyway from that. Whatever it is that you don’t know then that’s the thing to find out about.
A lot of times people feel like they don’t know how to write it therefore they better not start, they better not go to step one. The truth is about step two is that you have to do step one and then step two shows up, really simple.
If you think But I don’t know how and I don’t know where to go from step one? Then you’re stopped. You have to be willing to take step one and step one will always take you to two and so forth.
Film Courage: So then are we fine-tuning it in the revision stages? If I’ve never written a screenplay before but I know what I want to write and I’m just going to write it then eventually though someone might look at it and say ‘Okay, but this is a jumbled mess’ even though I understand…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).
