J. Horton, Filmmaker/Youtuber/Podcaster: I think it people just need to understand it’s not as insurmountable a task as it might seem.
Film Courage: J, why were you destined to become your own boss?
J.: Quite frankly I am not a good employee. I am just not good working for people. I never have been. I’ve always had a little bit of a problem with authority, a little bit of a problem with being told what to do when I don’t understand the reasons for it or if I see a different way to do it, especially in the creative realm.
I did my first probably 10 years working for other people either as an editor/director whatever it was and I always had issues. If I saw a different way to do it and I couldn’t do it because the boss didn’t want it that way. I always wanted to be my own boss all from the get.
Film Courage: But we hear this thing that film is a collaborative medium. I think everybody’s probably said that in an interview. At some point though somebody has to answer to somebody. You can never truly be your own person or free. You’re always answering to somebody. How do you reconcile this if you have a production and you’re just going to be collaborating with other people?
J.: What I find in my collaborations I am usually hiring, so I’m usually the one at the top. I find with collaborations, especially on low-budget stuff, it’s a matter of letting people have their own creative freedom to express themselves and do their thing within some confines of course. But with composers for example, usually for the first draft I let them go hog wild What do you want to do? Then I’ll make adjustments if we need to but as far as business partner collaborations I don’t…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
