Film Courage: What’s the difference between releasing a book on Wattpad versus Amazon?
Lux Raven, Watty-winning Romance Author / Wattpad Creator: I think one of the key differences is that generally on Wattpad you’re releasing episodically. A lot of people call it serial fiction where you’re releasing in a series. It’s often one chapter at a time or a couple chapters at a time. You’re kind of building an audience in the same way that you would a TV show or a podcast, basically where they are coming back for more week after week sort of thing.
There’s a little more flexibility. Generally on Wattpad unless you are specifically part of their paid programs, it’s free. They don’t pay to read and you don’t pay to post. It’s just like a social media sort of thing.
Wattpad does have their Creators Program and their paid program, I think it’s now Wattpad originals is what they’re calling it, where you do get paid for your reads and your work but there’s more of a readership that’s not necessarily paying or if they are paying they’re not necessarily paying as much as they would be on something like Amazon. They’re both a little more forgiving of if you have mistakes, if it’s an imperfect sort of thing. Also a little less discerning, they will abandon your book happily. They’re like well I didn’t really pay for this so if I’m two chapters in and I don’t like it, I’m gone (that’s if they make it two chapters in). There’s a lot of very quick decision-making that’s happening with the readers.
Amazon on the other hand, you post the full book and you can kind of decide how much you’re earning and unless you’re using a third party like a publisher or something but you have more say over what it is you’re making and what those rates are. It’s also a very specific audience of people who are either willing to pay for your content or they are more avid readers who are part of Kindle Unlimited or something like that where they’re not necessarily paying for your content specifically but they are paying for access to content like yours. If they access your content, you will get paid for that.
