Film Courage: Can you please take us through your editing process? Let’s say I’m a director and I come to you, what’s the first step?
Lucas Harger, Film and Commercial Editor, Supervising editor, and Partner at Bruton Stroube Outpost: The first step depending on how far we are through production even not but is to watch is just to watch all the footage. Usually I want the director to go away, let me watch, don’t give me anything yet. I don’t want to know, just let me watch the footage. That part of the process for me is very sacred. I’m the first audience and so I’m looking for things that bump me, that inspire me, that make me think. I’m looking for things that I can take and then polish off for the second audience, which is the true audience, the larger audience.
For me as an editor occupying that seat of the first audience I need that time with the footage to watch down, to understand what we have, to start to understand the characters, to form my own opinions about these people, about the story, about how I could see this unfolding. I just need that time with the footage.
After that, I like to pull in the director and we can have a fruitful and engaging conversation…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
