Film Courage: Why is it nearly impossible to get an agent or manager and what can you do about it?
Corey Mandell, Screenwriter and Screenwriting Instructor: Everyone has that which Is it impossible to launch a career without an agent or manager? No, but it’s a lot easier if you have one. Case in point, I was 23 years old, in film school and I launched my career by selling a pitch to Ridley Scott and it was in the front page of Variety and The Hollywood Reporter and he said he was going to make the film and he spoke about the script.
How did I get that meeting to go pitch to Ridley Scott? I can’t call Ridley Scott’s company and say Hey, I’m in film school. You don’t know me but I think you’re going to like my pitch…hello…hello?
I got signed by Diane Cairns, a major agent at ICM. Several years before that she had found the new writer and championed that writer and brought that writer into Ridley Scott’s company and they bought that writer’s project. Her name was Callie Khouri, the project was Thelma and Louise. Ridley made that movie. It won the Academy Award. A few years later when Diane calls and says Hey, I got the next Callie Khouri. I got this young writer you’ve never heard of. You’ve got to read his writing. You’ve got to meet with…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
