Film Courage: Why do some artists quit and some artists stay the course?

Ramon ‘Swift’ Sloan, director, producer and writer: I just think it’s a matter of tough skin. Some people have tough skin, some don’t. It goes back to those expectations again. If you get into a situation and you think that it’s just going to be a straight line, there’s not going to be any bumps, you’re not going to catch no bruises, it’s not going to be any obstacles or hurdles you got to jump over, I think that in those moments of the obstacles and the hurdles is what defines you.

You hear people talk about the journey all the time right and I think that’s the journey. Can people make it out of the journey? Some people don’t finish the race and I think it’s just because they have those unrealistic ideas about what it is like.

My case in point, this young gentleman, I went to see his movie a couple of months ago and he told me I’m about to get a half a million dollars for this movie. I just looked at him and I told him (not to crush him or anything) but I said Look man, I know where you’re at right now, I’ve been there and you’re not going to get a half a million dollars for this movie. He was talking about selling the movie for a half a million dollars. Any person that is a season producer knows why I would have said that to him, it’s several different reasons. Talent in the film, quality, a lot of different reasons why. I’m just using that situation as an example. Now if his goal is I’m getting a half a million dollars, I’m going to sell this for a half a million dollars and he can’t even sell it for $5,000, if he doesn’t…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
