Film Courage: When should a writer decide if they’re writing a crime series or a standalone story?
Jennifer Dornbush, Screenwriter, Author, Speaker, Consultant, and Forensic Science Specialist: Most literary agents are looking for writers who can deliver a series because there’s longevity to that. Most publishers are looking for writers who can deliver a series because there’s longevity. When you start to invest in a writer, whether an agent or a publisher, it takes a lot to invest in a writer. They want writers who this is a career, this is something they’re going to be doing for a while and going to be producing many works so that they can foster this career and make money.
When I’ve worked with my agent almost everything we’ve pitched/sold is all based on a series, almost everything. I know a lot of indie writers or hybrid authors and they write series because that’s the only way you can make money is if you’re continuing to pump out the next book and the next book and the next book and it starts to gather like a snowball down the mountain and then the residuals and the money gets bigger and bigger. It’s not purely financial but also I most authors that I know that are doing this, they want to spend time in a series, they want to develop a character and keep it going and readers love…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
