Beginners Guide To Making Movies That Make Money – J. Horton [FULL INTERVIEW]

“I’m not necessarily talking about ‘Hey I got hired as an editor or a DP’ which I have done. But I’m specifically talking about making money off the exhibition of the movies.”

I’m J. Horton. I make movies that make money. This is how.

Film Courage: J. why do you say you are a filmmaker who makes money?

J. Horton, Filmmaker/Youtuber/Podcaster: I’m making a very specific style of movie. I’m making low-budget features, usually under a $100,000 and the vast majority of filmmakers that I talk to that are making movies at this level, a lot of them aren’t making money, they’re losing from the distributors or they’re self-distributing and not doing anything. They don’t know how to make money. I’ve directed 25 feature films at this point. The first probably 10 years of my career I wasn’t making a lot of money on these movies. I didn’t know how to navigate it. I learned how later on and I like to make it so that other filmmakers can maybe get to that point sooner than I did. I like to share some of that knowledge with them. It took me a long time before my movies were breaking even or making money. On top of that, as I was starting my Youtube channel I was there’s a couple of growth experts that I’m following and they have their little catchphrases. I was like I need some catchphrase and just like that just came out. I was getting ready to do it and I was like I’m J. Horton. I make movies that make money. This is how. It just felt like something that would interest other filmmakers which was the whole goal of the channel in the first place.

Film Courage: You do this in your intro to the videos?

J.: Yeah.

Film Courage: It does work. When did you become the filmmaker who makes money?

J.: I’ve made money with my films from the beginning. I did struggle at the beginning but pretty much my first movie was distributed in 2003 by York entertainment. Now it didn’t make anything but from that and it was getting distributed and out there I started landing other filmmaking jobs and that’s where I first started to make money. But like when I say I’m J. Horton, I make movies that make money, I produce movies, I direct movies and I make money off those movies. I’m not necessarily talking about Hey I got hired as an editor or a DP which I have done. But I’m specifically talking about making money off the exhibition of the movies and I would say that started probably…(Watch the video interview on YouTube here).
