Film Courage: What do you think about The Gray Man having a limited one-week theatrical run?
Erick Weber, Editor-in-Chief of Awards Ace/YouTuber: No, I don’t like it. I think Netflix’s theatrical plans are just in disarray. They don’t have a theatrical component to their films. Netflix needs a theatrical component because at the end of the day we all know this, it’s a fact, when a film is in theaters its visibility is higher, it’s got more cachet, that’s how I was as a kid. We all went to movies, there was no such thing as day-and-date at home, Netflix or Disney + or any of these things that Hulu (name the streaming service), it was all about theatrical. Anything that wasn’t theatrical was a TV movie so it wasn’t viewed with the same lens. It was like this is a lesser film because it’s not on the big screen. That’s Netflix’s challenge is getting people to accept them as a studio such as Warner Brothers, Disney, 20th Century (obviously part of Disney), Sony, Universal, Paramount, these studios that have the legacy that Netflix does not have. The way you build legacy is you have to have a theatrical component. When I look at The Gray Man, a film that’s I believe a 200 million dollar budget, with the Russo brothers, 200 million dollar film and you don’t have it in theaters beyond one week and by the way not even the major chain, not AMC, not Regal…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
