Film Courage: Why are limitations on films actually a good thing in your mind?

Adam Davis, Writer/Director: Because that is what brings up creativity. Having limitations on a film set brings out creativity because when you’re sort of stuck by these boxes whether they’re financial or location-based or time-based, the best stuff really comes out of you.

You’re able to think of things that maybe you wouldn’t have if you had all the resources in the world. It can be over indulgent but when you don’t have any resources then you really have to get crafty and that’s when the most, purest creativity comes out.

What I’ve found is that things are much better when there are rules and sort of borders that you have to work your way around versus you can do anything so you end up potentially with nothing.

Film Courage: That’s true, maybe a filmmaker has a cool backdrop but then the story suffers. With BROKEN CEILING you had one location. You had it for four days, you had all your actors there. You knew you didn’t have to really change locations. Were there other limitations within that office building where you were shooting that really lends itself to the story?

Adam: I think we had a little bit of free rein of that office which was great. It was just the limitation of time was something that everybody runs into but…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).

Writer/Director Adam Davis has created numerous short films and has half a decade of professional on-set experience. The short films that he’s written, directed, produced and edited have garnered first place wins in various film festivals around the country since 2002. In total, his short films have won 13 top awards.

In 2016, Adam self-financed his debut feature film that he shot in just 4 days. BROKEN CEILING found distribution in 2018 and opened to stellar reviews from The Los Angeles Times. The film is now available on iTunes, Amazon, TubiTV and many other VOD services where it’s receiving rave reviews from the public. 

Adam and his writing partner, Will Corona Pilgrim, successfully Kickstarted a horror/action short film titled NO TOUCHING, which stars Zoë Bell, Heidi Moneymaker, Jake Busey, Tracie Thoms, Kevin Daniels and Doug Jones. It has amassed over 1 million views on YouTube and Facebook. 

Adam’s most recent project is a short film called LOSING SIGHT, about a man struggling with the new life he’s forced to live as a blind man.
