Screenwriting Teacher John Truby tells us that genre is the key to understanding screenwriting today.  He states that the first rule of Hollywood is that it buys and sells genres.

(Watch the video here)

Screenwriting Teacher John Truby tells us why it is so important for screenwriters to approach genre in a way that hasn't been done before.  He believes if you want to be a Hollywood screenwriter you must know how to write genres.  And in the Hollywood game where everyone is writing genre pictures the only way to win is to transcend the genre in a way the audience hasn't seen before.  He says this is the only way a writer can break through the crowd and have their scripts stand out.

Screenwriting Teacher John Truby rates the level of storytelling coming out of Hollywood today.  He says originality and creativity is found in independent filmmaking.  That Hollywood is about branding and creating franchises.  He points out that the third key element in Hollywood storytelling is television and in his opinion television is the best writing in the entertainment business.
