Film Courage: What does story structure mean to you?
Filmmaker, Geoff Ryan: Story structure for me is essential and yet at the same time I try to ignore it if that makes sense. With all of the stuff I’ve talked a bit about kind of like defying conventions or whatever, I also do believe that as an artist if you don’t understand what those conventions are, what structures are, then you are not defying them. You just don’t know what you’re doing if you don’t follow them.
I’ve read about it a lot and studied in terms of story structure and the 3-act, the 5-act structure (all that type of stuff) and there is such a value to it. Even if it’s not obvious that it’s there in a lot of films, it should kind of be there…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
