How My Screenwriting Process Changed From My 20s To 30s by Adam Davis

Film Courage: Had you written many short screenplays before?

Adam Davis, Writer/Director: Yes.

Film Courage: I’m not sure how many feature films you’d written but was your process the same for all of them?

Adam: My process changed a bit as I was going. There was definitely a phase in my mid-20’s where I brought out the cork board and started doing the cue cards on the board like Here is Act 1 — here are the scenes, here is Act 2, etc.

I sort of fell away from that because what I found (and this is the process that I found on BROKEN CEILING that really worked for me was just going into a word doc and making a very descriptive outline. The outline for the film was about 20 pages and I would write 1 through 10 — what is happening there, 11 through 20… And just break it down because I needed to make sure that the audience was kept on their toes throughout the entire thing. I needed to know what is going on in this 10-minute sequence, what is going on in the next 20-minutes? How do I make that different from that? How do I make these twists? Where does this come into play? Making it so that it’s the most dramatic and enjoyable thing that it can be. But I’ve found (and that’s what I’ve used ever since) is almost pre-writing the movie which is interesting. I will just…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).

Writer/Director Adam Davis has created numerous short films and has half a decade of professional on-set experience. The short films that he’s written, directed, produced and edited have garnered first place wins in various film festivals around the country since 2002. In total, his short films have won 13 top awards.

In 2016, Adam self-financed his debut feature film that he shot in just 4 days. BROKEN CEILING found distribution in 2018 and opened to stellar reviews from The Los Angeles Times. The film is now available on iTunes, Amazon, TubiTV and many other VOD services where it’s receiving rave reviews from the public. 

Adam and his writing partner, Will Corona Pilgrim, successfully Kickstarted a horror/action short film titled NO TOUCHING, which stars Zoë Bell, Heidi Moneymaker, Jake Busey, Tracie Thoms, Kevin Daniels and Doug Jones. It has amassed over 1 million views on YouTube and Facebook. 

Adam’s most recent project is a short film called LOSING SIGHT, about a man struggling with the new life he’s forced to live as a blind man.
