David F. Sandberg Explains Why He Didn’t Go To Film School

Film Courage: Did you think about going to film school?

David F. Sandberg (a.k.a PonySmasher on Youtube): I did…but only for the possibility of getting access to better equipment and things like that. Because I’ve always hated school. I’ve always loved learning and I’m old enough that when I was a kid we didn’t have the Internet. So I would take my bike down to the library and check out books on video production and filmmaking (stuff like that). They were very out-of-date. It’s like cameras from the 1970’s and things like that.

But I’ve always loved learning, I just always hated the school environment. A lot of it is because I’m usually pretty introverted…I can be kind of extroverted but then I need to recharge and get away from everything and be in my own world.

So I’ve never liked school. Whenever I’ve gone to a new school whether we moved or I was now older or something, every time it’s like This time I’m going to be a good student and everything is going to be great! And it is for a couple of months and then I just start skipping school and my grades just go…[motions down].

Technically I didn’t really graduate high school…I was there the last day. But I had played hooky so much that technically it wasn’t a real graduation.

So I did consider that you get access to real equipment and make something a little more professional but no, I never did.
