Finding The Story You Really Want To Tell by Julian Shaw

Film Courage: I mentioned earlier the term “purpose-driven” and then off-camera David mentioned “intuitive confidence.” And I actually like this better. I can see this in you, too. Where does that come from?

An ambitious documentary filmmaker discovers the darkest parts of himself when he turns his camera on a beautiful woman who humiliates men for money in Julian Shaw’s USE ME

Julian Shaw, Writer/Director/Actor: Well it’s undeniable. You get a feeling in your stomach and you can’t sleep. You’re so electrified. Your whole nervous system is just lit up and you know that you’re going to make a film about this idea.

It’s happened to me three times in my life and each time it did turn into a film. The first time I saw Pieter-Dirk Uys this famous South African political satirist, I saw him at the Sydney Opera House and he was talking about how he had gone all over South Africa and he’d seen a million school kids educating them about HIV and AIDS. And I just put myself in their shoes (these kids who were my age at the time) and it was just like I have to tell this story. I have to go to South Africa. I have to make a film about this person who is undeniable. And that turned into Darling! The Pieter-Dirk Uys Story.

It happened with CUP OF DREAMS (my second film) and again with Ceara [Lynch]…I mean I’m not exaggerating or making this into a story for you. When I went on her website, I knew I was going to make a film about her. I didn’t know what it was. I had no idea but I just got this feeling. And believe me, I’ve had a lot of ideas along the way that never turned into anything…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
