Film Courage: Another book of yours is Sell Your Story To Hollywood, The Writer’s Pocket Guide – The Business of Show Business. I know there’s lots of great nuggets in there. Something I saw from the Amazon page “There are four things in order that I’m about to read that will guarantee success (and this is in the book’s forward or something) Perseverance, Determination or Stamina, Connection, Be Fun To Work With and lastly…Talent? Really, that’s the order?
Dr. Ken Atchity, Author/Producer: Yes, that’s definitely the order. Actually in my mind I’ve added another one before Talent which is Luck. Luck is definitely important. But you can think about it, some movies get made just because of perseverance. Somebody keeps persevering and they can get the movie made and somebody can make a movie because they have connections, you know? Sophia Coppola, she got to make a movie. She’s got incredible connections and many other people in Hollywood.
Being fun to work with, that happens all the time. Movies get made because of that. I’ve never really seen a movie get made just because of talent. So all of these things, the three that I started with like perseverance, etc. being fun to work with, these are sufficient causes of movies. In other words, all you need is one of those and you’re able to make a movie but talent is not sufficient. You have to have talent plus one of those other things to make a movie and there is plenty of talent around. So that’s the bad news, talent is not enough to make a movie. But the good news is that if you have talent, it’s what everybody is looking for in Hollywood, looking for somebody who is truly talented because they don’t want movies that are just made with perseverance or being fun to work with or having connections, they want truly good movies.
So if you’ve got talent that’s great. But you need to get those other things, you need to persevere. It’s not a career for the faint-hearted. If you say you’re going to give yourself 5 years and then I’m going to go back to my horse ranch in Utah, you’ll be back there before you know it because life loves little deals like that and it always gets you back to the horse ranch.
If you say that there will be no limit on my career, I’m going to continue no matter what then you’ve got a chance to do it and maybe you’ll…(Watch the video interview on Youtube here).
